Understanding Habits and Addictions (Session Plan)

We use a youth voice approach when deciding what sessions to deliver therefore all session plans are created at young peoples request.

Young people have told us that they are addicted to vaping and drugs and have also complained about bad habits like constant scrolling social media

This session plan aims to educate young people about habits and addictions, promoting healthy coping mechanisms and self-care.

*Objectives*
1. To understand the difference between habits and addictions
2. To identify the risks and consequences of addictive behaviors
3. To develop strategies for managing habits and overcoming addictions
4. To promote healthy coping mechanisms and self-care

*Safeguarding Considerations*
1. Ensure a safe and supportive environment for all young people.
2. Establish clear boundaries and expectations for discussion.
3. Provide resources for extra support.

*Session Plan*
1. Introduce the topic of habits and addictions and ask participants to share their thoughts and experiences.

*Understanding Habits and Addictions*
1. Define habits and addictions, and discuss the differences between them.
2. Explore the risks and consequences of addictive behaviors (e.g., substance abuse, gaming addiction).
Tip Use visual aids like pictures, this keeps it more enagaging for young people

*Identifying and Managing Habits*
1. Discuss how to identify unhealthy habits and develop strategies for changing them. Tip We focused on triggers and recognising when you are more likely to partake in an unhealthy habit. ie doom scrolling could be down to boredom. Explore alternatives to combat boredom
2. Young people can create a personal plan for managing bad habits Tip Keep these short and sweet a few bullet points is enough to not overwhelm young people

*Overcoming Addictions*
1. Discuss the challenges of overcoming addictions and the importance of seeking help. Tip ask them if they could name someone they feel they could trust to ask for help
2. Introduce resources for support (e.g., counselling, online toolkits, websites).

*Conclusion*
1. Recap key takeaways from the session.
2. Let young people know you are available for a more confidential chat if needed.
3. Provide individuals with resources for further support and discussion.

*Evaluation*
1. Young people will complete a feedback form to evaluate the session's effectiveness. Tip if possible do this a week later to gain more measurable feedback
2. Youth workers will observe young peoples engagement and feedback during a debrief.
