WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOUNG PEOPLE ENGAGE WITH?.
I asked 50 males and 50 females aged between 12-16 if they like to engage with certain activities at our youth hubs. Here are the answers with some actions I will take to improve engagement in areas that need it.
SPORT - 37 Male & 18 Female
This highlights a strong male interest in sports providing a key area for program development.
ACTIONS - Use sport as tool for one to one mentoring to further support males with more pressing intervention needs
Sport sees moderate female participation indicating potential for increased engagement.
ACTIONS - Provide more female only sports clubs to encourage increased female engagement
MUSIC - 10 Male & 11 Female
Music engagement is relatively low compared to other activities. Although this suggests potential for improvement in drawing interest as the ones who do engage are highly focused.
ACTIONS - Use music activities as a targeted Intervention for keen individulas - exploring innovative ways to gain interest including trips to music events
ARTS & CRAFTS - Male 6 & Female 28
Arts & Crafts is a gender-polarized activity within the youth hub, suggesting potential for targeted efforts to increase male involvement or further support female enthusiasm with their favorite themes.
ACTIONS - Increase male engagement by pairing arts and crafts with supporting a popular sports activity ie creating banners, football shirt printing or team posters
DRAMA Male 8 & Female 15
Overall, the trend suggests Drama is less popular among both genders compared to alternatives.
ACTIONS - Strategically promoting Drama's unique benefits and intertwining it with popular preferences could help boost interest and participation.
PERFORMING ARTS Male 13 & Female 23
Performing arts has interest from both males and females.
ACTIONS - Consider diversifying the Performing Arts program or integrating cross-activity features (e.g., combining elements of Gaming or Music or drama) to attract broader interest, especially among males, given their higher preferences for competitive and interactive activities.
COOKING Male 23 & Female 27
Cooking is very popular among females and males
ACTIONS - use as focus activity to support more one to one targeted intervention - deliver collaborative workshops that improve skill level
GAMING. Male 31 & Female 10
Gaming stands out as a high engagement activity amongst the males but is noticeably lower amongst females
ACTIONS - providing more female-oriented console games that align with popular activities amongst females such as arts & crafts, cooking and performing arts
