Developing Photography Skills (Session Plan)

We use a youth voice approach when deciding what sessions to deliver, therefore all session plans are created at young peoples request.

Young people use there phones to create photos and wanted to develop their skills so to give their creations a "glow up"

This session plan aims to develop the creative skills of young people in photography, promoting self-expression and imagination.

*Objectives*
1. To develop skills when using cameras and editing software
3. To encourage creativity and imagination in photography
4. To promote critical thinking and storytelling through visual media

Resources*
1. Cameras or smartphones
2. Photo editing app

*Session Plan*
1. Introduce the topic of photography and and ask participants to share their photos.

Tip Young people are engaged with things they are proud of so ask to discuss their favorite photo and what they like about it. Discussions can then lead to photos they have issues with and why. This presents a clear NEED for individuals

*Photography*
1. Discuss photography hacks that can improve photos ( lighting, angle).
2. Ask young people to practice taking photos using smartphones or cameras.
3. Review and discuss the photos taken, focusing on imagination and creativity and if they used the previously discussed Hacks

*Editing*
1. Introduce basic editing software ( Many smartphones and social media already have this. There are also free apps available).
2. Young people will edit their photos, focusing on colours, filters and visual effects.
3. Discuss the impact of editing on the final product. Both positive and negative

*Conclusion*
1. Showcase the young peoples photos
2. Encourage feedback about the creative process.
3. Provide resources for further learning and development. Tip We provided them with links to free AQA photography mini courses and awarness information on how photos can create false narratives to encourage their critical thinking

*Evaluation*
1. Young people will complete a feedback form to evaluate the session's effectiveness. Tip Do this a week later if possible. This allows for more measurable feedback
2. Youth workers will observe young peoples engagement and creativity during the session and debrief and then report on effectiveness.
