Understanding and Addressing Bullying

We use a youth voice approach when deciding what sessions to deliver therefore all session plans are created at young peoples request.

The biggest youth concern in a feedback survey we did with young people aged 11-19 was bullying (you can read insights from the survey in a previous post)

This session plan aims to educate and empower young people to understand and address bullying, promoting a safe and supportive environment.

*Objectives*
1. To understand the definition and impact of bullying
2. To identify types of bullying and their effects
3. To develop empathy and understanding for those who experience bullying
4. To explore strategies for addressing and preventing bullying

*Safeguarding Considerations*
1. Ensure a safe and supportive environment for all young people.
2. Establish clear boundaries and expectations for discussion.
3. Provide resources for support if needed.

*Session Plan*
1.  Introduce the topic of bullying and ask young people to share their thoughts and experiences. Tip ask young people to tell you where bullying happens, this is their own experience and information can help to identify more pressing individual needs  

*Understanding Bullying*
1. Define bullying and its types (physical, verbal, social, cyberbullying). Tip use visual aids like pictures to make activity more engaging
2. Discuss the impact of bullying on individuals Tip get interactive use a large piece of paper a marker pen and ask young people to bullet point impact as a group

*Strategies for Addressing Bullying*
1. Discuss ways to respond to bullying (e.g., ignoring, telling a trusted adult, supporting the victim).
2. Introduce awarness on resources for support (e.g., helplines, online Toolkits, websites).

*Conclusion*
1. Recap key takeaways from the session.
2. Provide opportunities for further support and discussion in the form of a confidential chat after the session.

*Evaluation*
1. Young people will complete a feedback form to evaluate the session's effectiveness.Tip Forms to be done a week later if possible for better measurable feedback
2. Youth workers will observe participant engagement and feedback during a debrief reporting any concerns
